Overheard at the Howling Hog
Hold the crystal end of that staff over a patch of ground and it'll tell you what's under it: roots, rot, or a cellar somebody bricked over. The tall mushroom has walked the old orchard every evening, and three nights running the staff's stopped dead over the same spot. It's hiring diggers, paid in crystal chips.
Use it as
- A mushroom-folk wizard PC who leads with the crystal end
- A dowser the village hires to find water, or whatever's under the orchard
- A grove-keeper who'd much rather the party didn't dig at all
DM tip
Give the party a dowsing roll whenever it holds the staff over new ground. On a 6, something under the floor notices and starts digging up.
