Every notch down his long sword is somebody he couldn't save. Ask and he'll tell you every name. Last night he sat watching the common room for an hour, then quietly cut a fresh one. He says there's still time. He just needs to know which of you it's for.

DM tip

Add a notch to his blade whenever someone the party was protecting falls. When the sword runs out of room, give him a quest to set it right.
