Overheard at the Howling Hog

'Says here it lights candles,' he told his master, right before the scroll went up along with the candle, the curtains and the old man's eyebrows. He still reads from the scorched end, fire curling off his other hand. His master's paying good silver to whoever finds the missing half of the scroll.

DM tip

Let his spells misfire on a natural 1, 2 or 3. He's an apprentice, and the mess he leaves behind is half the fun.
